| Nesting: Nests vary - except for the parent's common intention of hiding it. This section will describe where the nest is placed, its shape, materials (composition), and details about the brood. A brood is simply the young birds or eggs. What good is a nest? Well, it is a warm, snug cradle to an egg, or a baby bird. The nest is their home during their early days, before the baby bird's eyes are open, or feathers and wings have developed, until they can fly and take care of themselves. When summer is gone, they will be ready to migrate with the other birds to their winter home. Should we help the birds nest-building efforts by supplying yarn and other materials? Some say this isn't necessary - but it may encourage birds to build their nests nearby. You could help by piling up twigs, soft strings and yarns, cotton, etc. Are young birds pushed from the nest? Expert ornithologists (bird watchers) say that parent birds teach their little ones by coaxing them to fly, not by driving them out of the nest. | ||
